Observed and fitted abundances of 256 species of saplings (1–10 cm dbh) over eight censuses, highlighting five abundant species whose populations had significant reversals. The black line is the fixed effect of the hierarchical piecewise regression model, and gray or colored lines are fitted abundances of individual species. The model was fitted with log abundances, but here they are back-transformed. Colored points are observed abundances for the five highlighted species (blue = Piper cordulatum, red = Acalypha diversifolia, brown = Inga marginata, orange = Ocotea whitei, green = Palicourea guianensis)
